“Our synthetic Pile garments represent a radical departure from standard cold weather clothing. Pile has similarities to wool, down and synthetic fills, but performs well in situations where each of these materials becomes limited. Pile fabric was developed about 20 years ago for use as a wool substitute by North Atlantic fishermen. Pile needs only half as much weight as wool to provide equivalent warmth but its superiority is in its drying properties. Like wool it maintains its loft when wet; unlike down, the slick pile fibers absorb little moisture. In a storm, water drains easily through the bottom of the garment. On the other hand, perspiration raised by strenuous activity wicks to the outside of the garment and evaporates” (Great Pacific Iron Works, 1982).
